The Mackinac Ferry System (5 boats each with a one hour ride) handled a maximum of 416 vehicles per hour and was on a night in June, 1958 replaced with a new bridge capable of handling 6,000 vehicles per hour. The Mackinac Bridge connects Mackinaw City (on the south side) with St. Ignace (on the north side) where the waters of Lake Michigan flow into Lake Huron known as "The Straits of Mackinac."
